Quick verdict
Our verdict
| If you… | Pick |
|---|---|
| Have never built anything and want the fewest surprises | Base44: 0 fix messages and a real database in all three of our test apps (tested on Builder, $50/mo) |
| Want to own and download your code later | Lovable: fastest in our test, with code download and Git sync (tested on Pro, $25/mo) |
| Want to try it for $0 first | Bolt.new: all three apps worked on the Free plan, then it ran out of tokens for the day (tested on Free) |
| Need a client portal where each client sees only their own records | Base44 or Lovable: both passed our separate-client check. Softr failed it on its Basic plan |
The short answer: for a complete beginner, Base44 was the easiest AI app builder in our hands-on test. It built our client portal, invoice tracker and landing page without a single bug-fix message and saved data in a real database every time. Lovable was faster and lets you keep your code, but it needed one extra message and saved our invoices only in the browser until we asked for a database. Bolt.new is the cheapest way to start, because it did everything on its free plan, but a beginner would have struggled with one step: we had to edit its database by hand to make an admin.
Beginners and non-coders: who this list is for
This page answers two questions people ask in different words: “what’s the best AI app builder for beginners?” and “which AI app builder works if I can’t code at all?” We treat them as one question, because our test was run the way a non-coder would run it: we pasted plain-English prompts, answered the tool’s questions, and asked for fixes in plain English. We didn’t open or edit any code.
It’s for you if you’re a freelancer, a small-business owner, a bookkeeper or accountant, or anyone with an idea for a simple app (a client form, a tracker, a booking page) and no developer. If you already code, these tools still work, but your list of “hard parts” will be different. New to all this? Start with our vibe coding for beginners guide.
How we ranked them
We built the same three small apps in every tool, using the same prompts word for word (see how we test):
- A client intake portal for an accounting firm: sign-up and login, an intake form with file uploads, each client sees only their own submissions, and an admin view to change statuses.
- An invoice tracker for a freelancer: clients, invoices with line items, automatic totals, Paid and Overdue statuses, and a dashboard.
- A landing page for a bookkeeping service with pricing, testimonials, an FAQ and a contact form.
For this list, we ranked by beginner friction, the things that stop someone who can’t code:
- Fix messages: how many times we had to report a bug before an app worked.
- Steps outside the chat: anything we had to do by hand in a settings screen or database.
- Interruptions: blank screens, pauses waiting for approval, or running out of allowance.
- Time to working, and whether the data was really saved.
Our overall scores (out of 10) are shown too. They weigh five things, including price and code ownership, so the overall score and the beginner ranking don’t line up exactly. Every number comes from our Oct 29, 2026 test logs. The plans weren’t the same: Base44 ran on its paid Builder plan, Lovable on paid Pro, Bolt on its Free plan and Softr on its Basic plan. Where a plan limit changed the result, we say so.

1. Base44: easiest for complete beginners
Tested on: Builder plan, $50/month billed monthly · Our score: 8.1/10 · Full Base44 review
Base44 was the least work for a beginner. All three apps worked with 0 fix messages and no steps outside the chat, and every app saved its data in Base44’s built-in database without us asking. The client portal worked in about 4.5 minutes. When we signed up a separate test client, that account saw no Admin link, got “Firm staff only” on the admin page, and saw only its own intake.
What slowed us down: the invoice tracker paused at a “processing checkpoint” and waited for us to approve deleting its own test record, which took it to about 12.5 minutes. Overdue status only applied to invoices marked Sent.

Beginner trap: “Public” by default. New Base44 apps defaulted to Public visibility in our test, even though nothing was published. Switch an app to Private or Workspace before you put anything real in it.
Pros
- 0 fix messages across all three test apps
- Real database in every app, with no setup decisions
- Separate-client access check passed
- Free “Check Security” scan, which used no credits in our test
Cons
- Tested on the $50 Builder plan; we didn’t test the cheaper Starter plan
- New apps defaulted to Public
- Base44’s docs say exported code relies on Base44’s backend, so you can’t simply take the app elsewhere
- Its landing page invented stats (“480+ small businesses kept current”, “Est. 2019”) that you’d have to delete

2. Lovable: best for beginners who want to keep their code
Tested on: Pro plan, $25/month billed monthly · Our score: 8.4/10 · Full Lovable review · Lovable pricing explained
Lovable was the fastest: all three apps worked in about 16 minutes, using 5.5 credits from the 100 on Pro. It needed 1 fix message: there was no built-in way to make the first admin, so we asked it to make our test account an admin. A separate test client then saw no Admin link and only its own submissions. We downloaded the code (100 files) and confirmed Git sync, which matters if you might hire a developer later.

Beginner trap: invoices saved in the browser. Our invoice tracker looked finished, but its data was saved only in the browser, not a database. Opened from another address, it showed $0.00. Lovable suggested adding online storage itself. If your app stores business records, say “save everything in a database” in your first message.
Also: after the email-confirmation link, the portal page was blank until we signed in again.
Pros
- Fastest of the tools we tested (about 16 minutes for all three apps)
- Code download and two-way Git sync confirmed in our test
- Separate-client access check passed
- No per-seat charges: unlimited workspace members
Cons
- 1 fix message to create the first admin
- Invoice data stayed in the browser until we asked for a database
- Credits vary by request, and hosting draws from the same balance
- Code download needs a paid plan
Step by step: our Lovable tutorial for beginners.
3. Bolt.new: best free start (if you don’t mind one technical step)
Tested on: Free plan, $0 · Our score: 8.4/10 · Full Bolt.new review · Bolt vs Lovable
Bolt built all three apps on its free plan, each with a real database, and let us download the code (a 30-file ZIP) without paying. That’s a lot for $0. But it’s third for beginners because of two moments a non-coder would find hard:
- Login got stuck. The client portal’s login failed until we reported it; Bolt fixed a database rule that was breaking sign-in. That one fix used about 84K of our 300K daily tokens.
- We had to make the admin by hand. There was no built-in way to create an admin, so we changed a user’s role in Bolt’s Database tab ourselves.

Beginner trap: the daily token cap. Bolt’s free plan has a 300K daily token limit. Our three builds used exactly that, and the next request got “You’re out of tokens. Switch to Pro”. Bolt says bigger projects use more tokens per message, so a growing app runs out faster.
Not tested on Bolt: the paid plans, CSV export, and a separate client signing in (so we can’t say whether clients only see their own records). We didn’t find a security scan button.
Pros
- All three apps worked on the free plan
- Real database in every app, no extra account needed
- Code download on Free
Cons
- Admin role had to be set by hand in the database
- A login bug needed a fix
- Free plan’s daily cap was used up by our three small apps
- A stray “\u2019” showed up in the landing page text
Not ranked: Softr (tested on Basic)
Tested on: Basic plan, $25/month billed monthly · Not scored yet: our tests need Softr Pro · Softr review
Softr builds apps from its own database and blocks, and you can keep editing without AI. We tested it on Basic, and for a client portal that plan held it back. Basic switched off the Admin and Client user groups our portal needed. Previewed as a test client, the app showed an Admin tab listing every submission, and the intake form wasn’t reachable for clients at all. In the invoice tracker we couldn’t add line items or get an Overdue status in the preview. The landing page did work, but it defaulted to yearly prices Softr invented and added a “Trusted by 1,000+ small businesses” badge.

One thing Softr did well: exporting a table to CSV worked on Basic with no AI message at all. Softr says its Pro plan ($119/month billed monthly) is the place to start for client-facing apps with role-based permissions. We haven’t tested Pro.
Tools we haven’t tested yet
Replit, Emergent, Claude Code and v0 also come up in “best AI app builder” searches. We haven’t run our three test builds in any of them, so we don’t rank them here. We’ll add them only after hands-on tests.
Beginner traps we hit (and how to avoid them)
- No way to make the first admin. Lovable needed a message; Bolt needed a database edit. In your first prompt, say: “Make my account the admin.”
- Data that isn’t really saved. Lovable’s invoice tracker kept data in the browser. Ask for “a database” by name.
- Public by default. Base44’s new apps were Public. Check visibility before adding real data.
- Running out of allowance. Bolt’s free daily cap ended our session. On credit plans, check your balance before big requests.
- Made-up copy. Every tool invented some text: Base44, Bolt and Softr added stats, and Softr added yearly prices. Read every word before you publish.
- Real client data in a prototype. Use fake names and test emails while building, and check who can see what before any real client logs in. Our vibe coding for accountants guide covers this in more detail.
Which one should you pick?
- Never built an app and want it to just work: Base44.
- Might hand the app to a developer one day: Lovable.
- Want to try before paying anything: Bolt.new on its free plan, or the free plans of Base44 and Lovable (we didn’t test those).
- Building a client portal: read our step-by-step client portal guide and the Base44 vs Lovable comparison. If you’re torn between the two cheapest starts, see Base44 vs Bolt.
FAQ
What is the easiest AI app builder for beginners?
In our Oct 29, 2026 test, Base44. It built all three of our test apps with 0 fix messages and no manual steps, and saved data in a real database each time. We tested it on the $50/month Builder plan.
What’s the best AI app builder for non-coders?
For non-coders who want the fewest surprises, Base44. For non-coders who want to own their code, Lovable. Both passed our check that a client sees only their own records. We didn’t write or edit any code in either test.
Is there a free AI app builder that actually works?
Bolt.new built all three of our test apps on its free plan, with a real database, but used up its 300K daily token limit doing it. Base44 and Lovable also have free plans, which we didn’t test.
Can I build an app with AI and no coding experience?
Yes, for small apps like forms, trackers and landing pages. In our test, the hardest parts weren’t code: making the first admin, making sure data was saved in a database, and checking who could see what.
Do I own the app an AI builder makes?
Lovable and Bolt let us download the code. Base44 also has a ZIP export, but its docs say exported code relies on Base44’s backend. Softr has no code export, only data export. We didn’t run any exported code outside its platform.
Why isn’t Softr ranked?
We tested Softr on its $25 Basic plan, which switched off the user groups our client portal needed. Softr recommends Pro for that, and we haven’t tested Pro, so Softr isn’t scored or ranked yet.
Is this the same as your best AI app builders for non-coders list?
Yes. Beginners and non-coders are looking for the same thing, so we keep one list for both.
