How we test AI app builders
- Same three builds in every tool. A client intake portal with logins, a simple invoice tracker, and a one-page landing site.
- We log the real cost. Credits or tokens used, time to a working version, and what broke.
- Dated and re-checked. Every review shows “Last tested” and “Pricing checked” dates. Prices change often in this category.

Our raw numbers are public: see the AI app builder usage study (every build, with a CSV), the pricing tracker and the credit and cost calculator, or browse all our free AI app builder tools. Exact prompts are in the tested prompt library.
Most recent test round: Oct 29, 2026 (Lovable Pro, Base44 Builder, Bolt Free).

About PrototypeVerdict
“Every tool we review gets the same three standard test builds, so results are comparable. We re-check pricing on a dated schedule, show real screenshots from our builds, and test tools that pay us nothing exactly the same way as tools with affiliate programs.”

AI app builder FAQ
What is an AI app builder?
A tool where you describe an app in plain English and the AI writes the code, sets up a database, and publishes it. Lovable, Base44 and Bolt.new are three popular examples.
Do I need to know how to code?
No for getting started; all three tools are aimed at people who don’t code. You’ll get better results if you learn to describe features clearly and test each step. Bolt’s own help center recommends building “one step at a time.” Source: https://support.bolt.new/
Which AI app builder is cheapest?
All three have free plans. The lowest paid price we found on Oct 29, 2026 was Base44 Starter at $16/month billed annually ($20 billed monthly). Bolt Pro is $18/month billed annually and Lovable Pro $21; both are $25/month billed monthly. Usage limits differ (credits vs tokens), so the cheapest plan depends on how much you build.
Do I own the code?
Lovable says you own your code and projects. Base44 says you own what you build and offers GitHub sync on Builder and higher, but its exported code still depends on Base44’s backend. Sources: https://lovable.dev/pricing · https://docs.base44.com/documentation/building-your-app/developer-tools
Are these tools safe for client data?
Treat any prototype as not ready for sensitive data until you’ve reviewed access controls. All three document security tools: Lovable and Base44 both have free security scans, which we ran: Lovable’s deep scan found no issues, and Base44’s flagged 7 high-severity vulnerabilities in third-party packages. Bolt’s docs describe a project security audit and a database security check; we didn’t find or run them in our test.
