Quick verdict
Our verdict
| If you… | Pick |
|---|---|
| Want the simplest all-in-one setup for an internal tool or portal | Base44 |
| Want the lowest paid entry price | Base44 (Starter $16/mo billed annually or $20 monthly, vs Lovable Pro at $21 annually or $25 monthly) |
| Might move your app (including the backend) somewhere else later | Lovable |
| Need Git sync on the free plan | Lovable (Base44’s GitHub sync starts at Builder) |
| Build for clients who want full ownership of the stack | Lovable |
Lovable vs Base44, short version (based on our test and each company’s documentation): Base44 is the “just works” option, with the backend included and nothing to configure. Lovable is the “keep your options open” option. Its built-in backend uses Supabase’s open-source foundation, and you can connect your own Supabase project. Base44, by its own docs, doesn’t support self-hosting.
Our test (same three prompts, Oct 29, 2026): Lovable was faster, with all three test apps working in about 16 minutes compared with about 22 for Base44. Base44 needed no bug fixes and saved every app’s data in a real database. Lovable needed 1 fix message, and its invoice tracker saved data in the browser only until asked for a database. In a recheck, both tools kept a separate non-admin client out of the admin view and showed it only its own submissions.

Prices as of Oct 29, 2026. Sources: https://base44.com/pricing · https://docs.lovable.dev/introduction/subscription-plans. Base44 prices read from both the Yearly and Monthly views of its pricing page; yearly billing saves 20%. Our monthly-billing Builder purchase was $50/mo before tax.
Why you can’t compare credits one-to-one: Base44 message credits and Lovable credits measure different things. Lovable charges Build-mode messages by complexity (its examples run from 0.50 credits for a small style change to about 2 credits for a landing page with images), and hosting and in-app AI draw from the same balance. Base44 says credit usage “varies based on the action and the selected AI model,” and it tracks integration actions in a separate pool.
What our test apps actually cost (Oct 29, 2026)
We used the same three prompts, word for word, in both tools: a client intake portal, an invoice tracker and a one-page landing page.
| Base44 (Builder) | Lovable (Pro, 100 credits) | |
|---|---|---|
| Client intake portal | ~4.5 min, 0 fixes, ~1.65 message credits | ~9 min, 1 fix, about 1 credit from the balance plus the day’s 5 free build credits |
| Invoice tracker | ~12.5 min (checkpoint pause), 1 “continue” message, ~5.45 credits | ~4 min, 0 fixes, ~3 credits |
| Landing page | ~5 min, 0 fixes, ~1.65 credits | ~3 min, 0 fixes, 1.5 credits |
| Where the invoice data was saved | Real database (Client and Invoice tables) | Browser only, unless you ask for a database |
| Total plan allowance used | ~8.75 of 250 monthly message credits (~3.5%) | 5.5 of the balance (105 → 99.5) plus 5 free daily credits |
| Pro-rated dollar value | About $1.75 at the $50/mo monthly price ($0.20 per message credit); about $1.40 at the $40/mo annual-billing price | About $1.40 at $0.25 per credit (5.5 credits) |
What this means: for apps this size, both tools used only a small slice of a month’s allowance, so cost isn’t what separates them. Speed and where your data is stored are. Lovable’s credit counting didn’t fully match between the balance and the usage page, so treat its numbers as approximate.

Code ownership and lock-in
This is the biggest real difference between the two.
Base44: The pricing FAQ says you own your code, data and users, and that two-way GitHub sync exports the full source code. The developer docs add that exported code “still relies on Base44 to run,” uses the Base44 SDK for data, logins, functions and integrations, and that “Base44 doesn’t support self-hosting.” Source: https://docs.base44.com/documentation/building-your-app/developer-tools
Lovable: Lovable says you own your code, projects and customer data stored in Lovable. Its built-in backend “utilizes Supabase’s open-source foundation,” and you can connect an external Supabase project instead of the built-in one. Sources: https://lovable.dev/pricing · https://docs.lovable.dev/features/cloud · https://docs.lovable.dev/integrations/supabase
What it means for you: If you’re building a quick internal tool you’ll keep on the platform, lock-in barely matters, and Base44’s simplicity wins. If you’re building something you might sell, hand to a client or move to your own servers, Lovable’s architecture gives you more room.
What we confirmed in our test (Oct 29, 2026): Base44’s editor has a Code tab with the full file tree, and its menu shows “Export project as ZIP” and “GitHub connection”. In follow-up tests the same day, Base44’s ZIP export downloaded 108 files (we didn’t connect its GitHub option), and Lovable’s “Download codebase” gave us a ZIP with 100 files, with two-way sync to GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket in Settings > Git. Both CSV exports of the invoice data worked after one extra message. We haven’t tried running either tool’s exported code outside its platform, so that part is untested, including what it would take to replace Base44’s backend.
Ease of use for non-coders
Both are aimed at people who don’t code. Based on documentation:
- Base44 emphasizes having no setup at all: the backend, auth and analytics exist from the first prompt on every plan.
- Lovable enables its built-in backend automatically, or asks for approval, when a feature needs it. It also offers Plan mode (1 credit per message) to think through an approach before changing code. Source: https://docs.lovable.dev/features/cloud
In our test (Oct 29, 2026): Base44 got to a working client intake portal faster (about 4.5 vs 9 minutes) with no fix messages. Lovable set up its backend automatically, but it needed one extra message before an admin account existed, and the portal was blank after the email-confirmation link until we signed in again. For the invoice tracker it was the other way around: Lovable was working in about 4 minutes, while Base44 took about 12.5 and paused to ask for our approval partway through.

Best for accountants and tax pros
For a firm’s internal tools (engagement tracker, document checklist, staff scheduler), Base44 is the simpler path because it has nothing to configure and the lowest paid entry. It saved data in a real database in all three of our test apps. On speed, our Oct 29, 2026 results were mixed. Base44 was faster on the client intake portal (about 4.5 vs 9 minutes) but slower on the invoice tracker (about 12.5 vs 4) and the landing page (about 5 vs 3). Lovable was faster overall (about 16 vs 22 minutes). For anything client-facing that holds sensitive data, look closely at access controls in either tool:
- Lovable documents row-level security policies, security scans, and a Business-tier security center plus SSO. Sources: https://docs.lovable.dev/features/database-access · https://docs.lovable.dev/features/security · https://docs.lovable.dev/introduction/subscription-plans
- Base44 documents data access rules, a built-in security scan it says to run before publishing, and SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certification; workspace SSO enforcement is on its Business and Enterprise plans. Source: https://docs.base44.com/Setting-up-your-app/security-overview
- In our test, Lovable’s free deep scan of the intake portal found no issues, though its dependencies panel listed 12 known issues without details. Base44’s free scan flagged 7 high-severity vulnerabilities in the app’s dependencies. We report these warnings but don’t score them.
Either way, build with fake data until you’ve reviewed the security settings and your firm’s policies.
Best for freelancers
Lovable is the safer default for client work because the client can own the repo and, if needed, its own Supabase backend. Lovable also runs an Expert program for builders who serve clients. Base44 works for clients who are happy to stay on Base44 and want the lowest running cost.
Pros and cons
Base44
- Pro: Backend, auth and hosting included on every plan, including Free
- Pro: Lowest paid entry ($16/mo billed annually, $20 monthly)

- Pro: We downloaded its code and confirmed Git sync in our test
- Pro: Credit controls: limits, alerts and long-job check-ins
- Con: Usage-based credits make monthly cost harder to predict
- Con: SSO and model-training exclusion by default require Business
Our verdict
Based on our Oct 29, 2026 test plus each company’s documentation: choose Base44 if you want an internal tool you’ll keep on the platform. In our test it needed no bug fixes and saved every app’s data in a real database. Choose Lovable if speed and portability matter more, or you’re building for clients. It was faster in our test, and its backend can move to your own Supabase project. If you pick Lovable, ask for a database whenever the app stores records. Both passed our client-vs-admin recheck with a separate non-admin login. Base44’s sign-up also rejected disposable emails and required an emailed code.

Base44 vs Lovable FAQ
Is Base44 or Lovable better?
Neither is better for everyone. Base44 is simpler and cheaper to start. Lovable offers more portability through its Supabase-based backend and Git sync on every plan.
Which is cheaper, Base44 or Lovable?
As of October 2026, Base44 Starter is $16/month billed annually ($20 billed monthly), and Lovable Pro starts at $25/month billed monthly ($21/month billed annually). Both have free plans. Real cost depends on how many credits your project uses.
Can I move from Base44 to Lovable?
You can export Base44 code (Builder and higher), but it relies on Base44’s backend, so moving means rebuilding the data and backend parts. We haven’t tested a migration.
Which is better for websites?
For a simple marketing site, both work, but a traditional website builder may be simpler. Lovable requires Pro for a custom domain. Base44 lets you connect a custom domain from Starter, with a free domain for one year on annual billing.
Which is better for non-coders?
Base44 has fewer decisions to make because everything is included. Lovable is also built for non-coders and adds a Plan mode to think through changes before building.
Do both tools let me own my code?
Both say you own your code. The practical difference is that Base44 doesn’t support self-hosting its backend, while Lovable’s backend can be your own Supabase project.
