Lovable “Exceeded Quota” Error: What It Means and How to Fix It

By the PrototypeVerdict Test Team · Docs checked: Oct 29, 2026 · Our tests: Oct 29, 2026

If Lovable shows an “Exceeded quota” message, or simply stops building, there are three possible causes: a problem on Lovable’s side, running out of build credits, or your published app running out of the credits that pay for its backend and AI features. Here’s how to tell which one you’ve hit and what fixes each, with a focus on the free plan.

Quick answer

Check in this order

Check If yes Fix
1. Is Lovable having an incident? (status.lovable.dev) It’s not you. On Apr 28, 2026, Lovable’s status page reported a login incident in which users saw “Exceeded quota”. Wait for the incident to be resolved, then sign in again.
2. Are your build credits used up? Free gives 5 build credits a day, up to 30 a month. When they’re gone, building stops. Wait for the reset at 00:00 UTC (daily) or the 1st of the month (monthly cap), or upgrade.
3. Is it your live app that’s failing? Its AI features or backend have run out of the monthly grant and your credits. Add credits or wait for the monthly grant, then select Wake up on the paused backend.

Cause 1: a Lovable incident (you still have credits)

“Exceeded quota” isn’t always about your balance. On Apr 28, 2026, Lovable’s status page reported: “some users are seeing an ‘Exceeded quota’ error and others are being unexpectedly logged out.” It marked the incident resolved 19 minutes after first posting it. Source: Lovable status page.

One user on a paid plan posted the same day that Lovable logged them out and said “Quota exceeded” at sign-in: “i have a paying plan … and i still have about 200 credits left” (r/lovable, Apr 28, 2026). So if your credits look fine, check the status page before changing anything.

Cause 2: out of build credits on the free plan

Lovable’s free plan gives 5 build credits a day, capped at 30 a month. Lovable’s own example: if you use all 5 every day, you get daily credits for the first 6 days of the month and then nothing until the 1st. Source: Lovable credits and usage.

When your daily build credits and any other credits are gone, Lovable’s docs say “sending a new message opens a dialog instead of building,” with an option to upgrade on Free. If a message is in progress when the balance hits zero, Lovable pauses it and offers Add credits or Finish up. Source: Lovable out-of-credits recovery. We haven’t seen this dialog ourselves. The out-of-credits messages Lovable’s docs do name are “Workspace out of credits” (for members who can’t manage billing), “Out of credits to chat” and “Credit limit reached.” None of them is “exceeded quota,” so we can’t confirm Lovable uses that wording for running out of credits.

When the credits come back. Daily build credits and the daily chat allowance refresh every day at 00:00 UTC. Free monthly grants refresh on the 1st of each calendar month at 00:00 UTC. Same source as above. In US time, that daily reset lands the evening before:

00:00 UTC is… Until Nov 1, 2026 (US daylight time) From Nov 1, 2026 (US standard time)
US Eastern 8:00 PM the evening before 7:00 PM the evening before
US Central 7:00 PM the evening before 6:00 PM the evening before
US Pacific 5:00 PM the evening before 4:00 PM the evening before

US daylight saving time ends Nov 1, 2026, which is why the reset moves an hour earlier on US clocks from that date.

What our test showed. We tested Lovable on Pro, not Free, but Pro also gets the 5 daily build credits and spends them first. Building our client intake portal used all 5 daily build credits plus 1 credit from the monthly balance, and Lovable’s usage page put that project at about 6 credits. A build that size would probably not fit in one free day. Our landing page used 1.5 credits from the balance. Source: our Oct 29, 2026 test log, summarized in our Lovable pricing guide.

How to make free credits last

  • Put the whole spec in the first prompt. Our three standard prompts each built a working app in Lovable with at most one fix message. They’re in our prompt library.
  • Say who the admin is, and ask for a database. Our only Lovable fix message asked it to make our test account the admin, and our invoice tracker saved its data only in the browser because the prompt didn’t ask for a database. Putting both in the first prompt can save a follow-up message.
  • Use Chat mode to ask questions. Lovable says chat messages draw on a separate daily chat allowance first. It says this chat pricing is temporary and applies through Oct 31, 2026, so check its docs after that date. We haven’t tested Chat mode.
  • Plan mode isn’t free. In our test, one Plan-mode message cost 1 credit and changed no code. Lovable’s docs price Plan-mode messages at 1 credit each, plus the cost of any research Lovable runs while planning.

Cause 3: your published app ran out

A published Lovable app uses credits too, separately from building. On Free, the monthly grants are 20 Cloud credits (backend: database, storage, sign-in) and 4 AI credits (AI features inside your app). Source: Lovable credits and usage.

  • AI features fail with an error. Lovable’s AI docs say requests return 402 Payment Required when the workspace is out of credits, and 429 Too Many Requests when the app goes over the per-workspace rate limit. Source: Lovable AI.
  • The backend pauses. When the monthly Cloud grant and your general credits are gone, Lovable pauses the database, storage and sign-in. Daily build credits can’t pay for this. Your published pages keep loading, but anything needing the backend stops.
  • Adding credits isn’t enough on its own. Open More → Database in the project and select Wake up. Source: Lovable out-of-credits recovery.

On Free, the other option is to wait for the 1st of the month at 00:00 UTC, when the monthly Cloud and AI grants refresh.

Step by step: fixing it now

  1. Open status.lovable.dev. If there’s an active incident, wait.
  2. Open Workspace settings → Plans & credit usage, or click your workspace name to see the credit bar. Hover the info icon next to Free usage included to see daily build credits and the monthly Cloud and AI grants left.
  3. If build credits are at zero, wait for 00:00 UTC (see the table above), or for the 1st of the month if you’ve used Free’s 30-credit monthly cap, or upgrade. On paid plans you can also buy a top-up.
  4. If your live app is broken, check More → Database for a paused card, then select Wake up once credits are available.
  5. If none of that explains it, ask in the project chat why credits are being used, or contact Lovable support.

Lovable Pro, the first paid plan, was $25/month billed monthly when we checked on Oct 29, 2026. Our full breakdown is in Lovable pricing explained.

Frequently asked questions

What does “exceeded quota” mean in Lovable?

It can mean a Lovable-side problem rather than your balance: on Apr 28, 2026, Lovable’s status page reported users seeing an “Exceeded quota” error during a login incident, and one paid user said they still had about 200 credits. Otherwise, check whether your build credits or your app’s monthly Cloud and AI grants have run out.

When do Lovable free credits reset?

Daily build credits refresh every day at 00:00 UTC, which is 7 PM US Central until Nov 1, 2026 and 6 PM after that. The free plan caps daily credits at 30 a month, and monthly grants refresh on the 1st at 00:00 UTC.

How many apps can I build on Lovable’s free plan?

Lovable doesn’t give a number. Free gives 5 build credits a day, up to 30 a month. Lovable’s usage page put our client intake portal at about 6 credits and our landing page used 1.5, so a small app may take more than one day.

My Lovable app stopped working after I added credits. Why?

A paused backend doesn’t restart by itself. Lovable’s docs say to open More, then Database, in the project and select Wake up. AI features come back on their own within a few seconds of adding credits.
